DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR RECITAL FOR 2007 GRAD

This week we are delighted to share another success story of a Burlington High School music department graduate.

Meghan E. Murray, Burlington High School class of 2007, presented her junior piano recital at Westminster Choir College (Rider University, Princeton, NJ) on Saturday October 24, 2009. The recital, held in Williamson Hall to a capacity crowd, was extremely well received and was partial fulfillment for a Bachelor degree in Music Education and Piano Performance. Meghan researched, wrote and completely produced the program notes.

The 45 minute recital consisted of four presentations beginning with J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue XVI in G Minor. Beethoven was next in order with “Sonata No. 6 in F Major”, followed Zabrack’s “Scherzo,” “Hommage a Prokoviev,” “Preludes” by Debussy, and Schumann’s “Waldszenen, Neun Klavirestucke, Op. 82.”

Following the recital a reception was hosted by Meghan’s parents, Al and Beth Murray, in honor of their daughter’s accomplishment. Also in attendance were paternal grandparents Al and Lori Murray of Brockton, Massachusetts, and maternal grandparents Paul and Evelyn Robinson of Brentwood, New Hampshire. It was a particularly special day for Meghan because her grandmother, Evelyn, was a 1946 graduate of Westminster.

While she was a student at BHS, Meghan was a valued member of the BHS Select Chorus. In 2006 she attended the MENC Sr. Districts and progressed to the All-State competition where she was selected to participate in the biannual MENC All-Eastern Honors Choir.

Meghan is a member of the Westminster chapter of Westminster Choir College MENC (National Association of Music Educators) Chapter 183 as well as a founding member of the charter of SAI. Meghan is a piano student of Ms. Phyllis Lehrer.

We extend a hearty congratulations to Meghan, her parents Al and Beth Murray, and brother David who is a member of the BHS class of 2010.

A WISE OLD MAN ONCE SAID . . .

"Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe,
wings to the mind, flight to the imagination,
a charm to sadness and a gaiety and life to everything.
It is the essence of order and leads to all that is true and beautiful."

ODE TO A BAND DIRECTOR

Something awesome happened last night at the Burlington/Watertown football game. It was fourth quarter, the Red Devils were leading and the ball was in our possession and out of nowhere came the melody of a familiar song . . .
Na-na-na-na, Na-na-na-na, Hey, hey, goodbye . . .

For most, it was just the background sound of a couple of band members picking out the notes of a song, something not uncommon because the BHS kids do love to discover new songs on their instruments. Upon closer inspection, however, marching band director Matt Lovell was in middle of the players and melody. Next thing we knew he was calling out to change something to an “E flat,” then jumped back, closed his eyes tight, fingers writing something in the air, head bobbing back and forth. Section by section he worked out each part. Oh my gosh, is he spontaneously creating this arrangement in his head and then teaching it on the spot?

Indeed he was. What a treat this was to witness. Mr. Lovell, a teacher who is obviously passionate about music and his students, was in the midst of creating and implementing a lesson plan!

Much has been written about education and how technology is moving so fast that we will probably never get ahead of it. But honestly, sometimes there is nothing like old fashioned learning. Burlington parents are thrilled that our schools support and embrace music education with teachers who go beyond the call, providing unlimited opportunity for our students to learn and thrive.

Mr. Lovell often sings the praises of our students who are, and always have been, a creative and talented bunch. But with the lesson of last night’s arrangement, it’s no wonder. You know what they say . . . The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

A MAGIC MUSIC NIGHT AT BHS

GALA BENEFIT CONCERT AND SILENT AUCTION
Saturday, November 7, 2009, 7:30 pm, Fogelberg Auditorium

The Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction promises to be another memorable night for the BHS community! John Middleton-Cox, Matt Lovell, Leanne Reardon and Jen Agati have all been busy auditioning and preparing the performers for the benefit concert and the program is progressing beautifully. The BHS Marching Band, Color Guard and Dance Squad will all independently perform on the program, joined by local friends of the band including Amanda Potts (Assistant Band Director and Burlington schools music teacher), Tim Rose and Mark Sapossnek (Music Boosters Vice President-Band and friend of the Music Boosters, respectively), and John Middleton-Cox (BHS Chorus Director). Student auditions took place last Wednesday with one more round to go today and final selections will be made by the end of the week. This is going to be one wonderful concert! John Middleton-Cox is producing the performance … well, what more can we say! Lights, sound, props … a fantastic show is on the horizon!

The committees are in place. Members are actively involved in securing the final silent auction items and local bakeries have committed to the festive dessert reception with coffee and pastries. Doors will open at the high school at approximately 6:30 pm on the evening of the event for auction bidding to commence. There will be many items on which to bid highlighted by tickets to a Patriots Game, opening night tickets to the Reagle Players holiday favorite “It’s ChristmasTime,” BHS season tickets to The Crucible (fall) and Titanic (spring), as well as a number of baskets and gift certificates to favorite restaurants and other local services. Bidding on these items will continue through the dessert reception during intermission but will close promptly at the beginning of the second half of the concert. Winners of the silent auction items will be posted and all transactions will be finalized post-concert!

The most important part of this wonderful evening of music is that it will benefit the students of the Burlington High School Marching Band and their trip to Disney World during April of 2010. All ticket sales by individual students will be applied directly to their Disney account. Door sales and silent auction revenue will be used for related Disney costs and Boosters programs.

Sounds great, right?! Don't forget to purchase your tickets from a Marching Band, Color Guard or Dance Squad member! Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens and $15 for adults (also available at 781-A-FUN-TIC).

And, oh yes, bring your checkbook!!!

YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND IN ME!

Although the waters have seemingly been still on the blog in the last week, this is just the calm before the storm as there has been a great deal of activity in the Music Boosters camp during the last week. The Friends of the Music Boosters annual appeal has been mailed, the Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction are moving furiously towards performance date, and the Calendar Raffle is taking shape for distribution and sale! This week we’ll present all three fundraisers under the microscope beginning with our annual appeal for friends.

FRIENDS OF THE MUSIC BOOSTERS

This annual appeal is one of the largest fundraising efforts the Music Boosters host. Simply put, we ask local businesses, alumni families and current families to become our friend by making a tax deductible donation. Sounds simple, right? Well … it is a process. Here is some insight into the workings of the Friends campaign.

The Music Boosters Association has historical contact data for each family that we have access to since 2002! Entered into our “master cylinder” Excel spreadsheet, we are able to separate alums from current students, making a concerted effort to eliminate duplication of letters due to multiple family member performers! This activity always has twists and turns as new students join the band or chorus after the start of school in the fall but we eventually catch up and finalize our current student list. Once that happens the mailmerge for labels takes place.

In the meantime the appeal letters, three to be exact, are prepared. Each version is specific to the group to whom it is mailed. And there are two giving levels, one for businesses and one for private donations. Approximately 700 letters were prepared for mailing this year.

Included in the mailing each year is our Performance Calendar card, a nifty brightly colored reference card with the full school year of performances on one side and the football schedule/half-time shows on the other. This piece goes to everyone…we want to make sure that our prospective donors see the full picture of the contributions our students make to school and community. Once again, there are minor twists and turns with dates and times at the beginning of the year but once it’s finalized, off it goes to the printer. Finally, this year there was also a piece that went into the envelopes for an upcoming special event, printed three per sheet and then cut to size.

Labels, envelopes, three versions of the appeal letter, performance cards, special invitations. There are lots of pieces and time that go into this fundraiser. The final step, the actual mailing preparation, was supervised this year by Corresponding Secretary Vicki Kikuchi and we were fortunate to have a small army of students pitch in to help. A couple of hours later, a few laughs and off went the envelopes for postage!

Our efforts on this appeal are always handsomely rewarded by our friends whose donations bring our total to an annual average in the thousands of dollars range! All donors to the Friends of the Music Boosters campaign are given special recognition in the BHS Holiday Concert program and since we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization we provide a receipt for their generous donation. All revenues from this appeal are applied to our general fund for scholarship commitments and programs that we support in the music department.

Stay tuned for other fundraising updates this week! If you would like a performance calendar or would like to make a contribution and be our friend, you can contact us at burlgregs@yahoo.com.

BHS MARCHING BAND WOWS CROWD AT SALEM INVITATIONAL

On the evening of Saturday, October 10, the Burlington High School Marching Band took to the field at the Salem (NH) High School Fourteenth Invitational Band Show. One of 16 bands participating in this event ranging in size from 27 to over 300 members, the BHS Marching Band of nearly 100 held its own as an annual favorite of the crowd of 3,000 in the stands.

Demonstrating not only its musical prowess but an ability to entertain the masses with its performances of “Star Trek Themes” and “Cantina Island” (music from “Star Wars”), the BHS bandies were described with great excitement by spectators as “a show band.” The moment the Color Guard lit up the field with their sudden burst of flags at the beginning of the show, the crowd surrendered its attention to the Burlington band. From the dance squad members re-enacting the fight scene in “Cantina Island,” to the rock and roll legs of the musicians, to the percussion section undulating rotation, the students from BHS made a huge impression on the spectators, bringing the crowd to their feet with wild cheers and a standing ovation when all was said and done!

The BHS Marching Band always seems to set the standard for new and innovative marching routines and often sees its ideas and movements brought back in the following years by bands who have been witness to their creativity. Congratulations to the entire Marching Band for their ingenuity and outstanding performance. Special thanks to Director Matt Lovell, Assistant Director Amanda Potts, Color Guard Advisor Jen Agati, Dance Squad Advisor Leanne Reardon and Percussion Advisor Joe Cincotta. Extra special congratulations to our student leaders, Drum Majors Eric Leva and Caitlin Riggs, Color Guard Captains Taylor Waisnor and Erin Kelley, and Dance Squad Captains Christina Kashgegian and Andrea McSheehy.

BHS STUDENT PERFORMANCE: UNDERTOW PLAYS PALLADIUM IN WORCESTER

Burlington High School student musicians don't just limit their performances to BHS where they learn their instrument and are prepared for a variety of performance opportunities. Their talents extend to communities outside of Burlington and because of this we will feature some of these students on occasion with a few words about their accomplishments.

On Saturday, October 10, a large group of Burlington students packed into cars and vans and headed to Worcester to support Patrick Hanafin (far right in picture) and his band, Undertow, as they performed at the Palladium in the “Next Big Thing,” an all-day concert featuring up and coming alternative and punk rock bands. Pat is a percussionist with the Burlington High School Marching Band and is also a member of the Jazz Ensemble. Featured on the main stage, Undertow attracted a huge amount of attention as they played, outshining other bands who were also performing.

Congratulations to Pat and all the members of Undertow on a fabulous show at the Palladium!

FUN FUNDRAISING AT WOBURN HALLOWEEN PARADE

The Burlington High School Marching Band will be marching to the beat of a different drummer when it takes to the streets of Woburn on October 25, participating in the Woburn Halloween Parade. Organized by the Woburn Host Lion’s Club, the annual parade is celebrating its 55th year. For a number of those years, the Burlington Red Devils Marching Band has taken its place, proudly representing Burlington as it winds along the parade route down Woburn’s Main Street.

The Marching Band members from Burlington will use the opportunity to host its own “Halloween Parade March-a-thon.” As a fundraising opportunity for their upcoming trip and performance in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando during the spring of 2010, members will be collecting pledges for their 5-mile march that will be applied towards their individual Disney accounts.

A favorite annual event with an estimated 80,000 spectators of all ages, the Woburn Host Lion’s Club Halloween Parade also provides an opportunity for Lion's Club members to collect donations along the parade route for eye research. Featuring a multitude of bands and marching units, close to 100 floats and over 5,000 participants in the parade, it will be a great take on the afternoon of the 25th!

The Burlington High School Marching Band is certain to be one of the highlights of the day. With each instrumental and auxiliary unit topping their marching uniform with costumes and disguises, this group of musicians always entertains the crowd and is considered to be one of the best marching bands in eastern Massachusetts.

The Woburn Host Lion’s Club Halloween Parade is free of charge. Make a day of it and support our talented young students from Burlington High School.
