JIMINY CRICKET...IT'S OFFICIAL!

The Burlington High School Marching Band has been formally invited to perform at Walt DisneyWorld in April of 2010! Officials at Disney Magic Music Days sent Matt Lovell the following communique:

"Disney Magic Music Days congratulates Burlington High School “Red Devil” Marching Band on being selected to be part of the entertainment at the WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort!"

This is the sixth time Mr. Lovell has taken his group to DisneyWorld. Although the trips seem to take place every three years, he is particular about the groups that represent BHS and will only take those that comply with the high standards for which we are known. In the mandatory meeting held at the beginning of the school year, Mr. Lovell assured parents that he is confident this group will be on their best behavior, confirming to all the world (after all, every continent is represented as visitors to DisneyWorld) that the students from Burlington, Massachusetts are the best bunch of kids around!

Even though the students will be the performers, a trip of this magnitude could not be made without parental support. Parent volunteers from the Music Boosters Association have begun the tedious process of organizing fundraising opportunities and tracking the students' trip accounts. As in previous years, they will assist in tackling the logistical headache of packing instruments, uniforms and equipment just prior to the band’s departure. And several lucky ones will have the honor of chaperoning! This year's trip will differ from those of previous years in that BHS has contracted with All Seasons Travel to handle all travel and housing arrangements.

The hard work has just begun. Although the Marching Band has been rehearsing for and performing at the football half-time shows, serious practice for their performance at DisneyWorld will not begin until mid-winter. Given New England weather during that time of year, the students will initially find themselves practicing their marching routines inside the high school.

For some students, traveling to Orlando may be their first trip far away from Burlington and perhaps their first ride on a plane. For all students, however, marching at Walt DisneyWorld is yet another opportunity to practice the level of teamwork and professionalism they achieve throughout the football marching season. Our students will not just be representing themselves as they step onto the pavement at the DisneyWorld but will be ambassadors of music from their hometown of Burlington, Massachusetts, viewed and listened to by people of every generation and culture from across the world.

FUN-DRAISING 2: BURLINGTON FALL FAIRE

The first annual Burlington Fall Faire was held this Saturday, September 26, on the Burlington Common. It appears to have been quite a success with a range of activities from live craft demonstrations to historical displays.

The Music Boosters participated in the event as a fundraising effort for student volunteers to raise money for their DisneyWorld individual accounts. Chaired by Shirley Fong, there were 21 students and five adult supervisors. Popcorn and water were the fare for the day, quenching the thirst and feeding the appetites of visitors. All proceeds will go directly to the individual student volunteer Disney accounts. Thanks to all the parents and student volunteers for making this a wonderful success.

THE LION KING+BOOSTERS=FUN-DRAISING!

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association begins its fundraising season with a bang! In cooperation with Broadway Across America and its EventUsher service, the Music Boosters are selling tickets for Disney’s National Touring Company performance of The Lion King at the Boston Opera House. The performance date is February 17, 2010, at 7:00 pm, and falls during Burlington Public School’s winter break.

The price of each ticket for The Lion King includes an automatic donation that will go directly to the BHS Music Boosters Association and is comparable to the standard retail price with handling charges. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be used for one of the many programs the Music Boosters provides to music students at the high school, including the Marching Band's trip to Walt DisneyWorld in the spring.

A fantastic holiday gift and available for purchase by anyone, tickets for the BHS Music Boosters The Lion King fundraiser can be purchased by visiting the Broadway Across America website at http://www.eventusher.broadwayacrossamerica.com/. (enter “BURLING2009” at the login prompt). Ticket prices range from $48-$97. This special opportunity expires on October 28, 2009.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!--REVISED TIME

The Burlington High School Red Devil’s football game will be held in Stoneham tomorrow night beginning at 6:30 pm. BHS Marching Band students are expected to arrive at the high school by 4:45 pm to suit up and pack up for a 5:30 pm bus!

This is the second away game to which the band has travelled. The BHS Marching Band has had a long history of playing at every home AND away game, doing so when no other band in the league has travelled! It's a testament to the support we have always been given by staff and administration.

The Music Boosters are extremely proud of the students. Take time to come out to the game on Friday. The half-time show is absolutely out-of-this world (no pun intended), with selections from Star Wars and Star Trek!

Beam Me Up, Mattie!

WITH THIS RING I THEE WED

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association would like to congratulate high school bands director Matt Lovell and Liz Geraghty, a teacher from Reading, MA, on their marriage that took place on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

Mr. Lovell has been teaching both the Marching and Concert BandS for nearly 25 years at Burlington High School. As a result of his expertise, commitment and love for his profession, BHS music students have had the finest of instrumental and marching education. Mr. Lovell has also impacted students at BHS who have a desire to learn music composition in the ever-popular class, Music Theory.

Matt informed his students on Thursday of his impending marriage, to the delight of one and all. Congratulations, Matt and Liz. May you have a lifetime filled with happiness, joy and most of all, love!

SELECT CHORUS COMMEMORATES 9/11 AT BHS

This morning the Select Chorus sang the National Anthem during morning announcements as they assisted Principal Larkin in BHS' remembrance of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. This solemn moment in our students' day was also marked by a moment of silence to honor four individuals connected to Burlington who perished during the tragedy of that day.

Mr. Larkin has included a video of this on his blog. You can view it at:
http://burlingtonhigh.blogspot.com/2009/09/september-11th-morning-announcements.html .

Are You Ready For Some Football?

The first football game of the season will take place tomorrow evening when Burlington travels to Billerica in the traditional season opener. Gametime is 7:00 pm and is not held at Billerica High School but rather at Marshall Middle School, 15 Floyd Street, Billerica.

After hours of practice, including two weeks of band camp, it's showtime! If you have a first year Marching Band student (and even if you don't) there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
  1. Marching Band members are expected to be at the school at 5:15 pm.
  2. Buses will depart BHS at 6:00 pm.
  3. Black socks and shoes for instrumentalists.
  4. White T-shirts given to the students at Band Camp are recommended for under instrumental uniforms. When the weather gets cold some kids will want to use gloves without the fingertips...keep a lookout for them in the stores now so your student won't be caught without! Instrumentalists are assigned coats to wear over their uniforms in cold/wet weather.
  5. Snacks and drinks will be provided by the Music Boosters for members at all home and away games. However, there is always a snack bar at the football fields (in case they ask for money off that tree in the backyard). Shirley Fong is the Music Boosters Hospitality Coordinator. If you are interested in contributing a snack for the games, please contact her: shirltalk@aol.com.
  6. Marching Band parents are always at the games. It's great fun to watch how fantastic the students are and how they progress through the season, especially in their marching routines! Tickets to games generally cost between $6-$8. Season tickets are available...please phone the Athletics Department at BHS for information.
  7. Arrival time back at the high school varies. It's probably best to ask your student to give you a call when they are on their way back to the school. Keep in mind that they must also change back into their street clothes and hang their uniforms before they depart from the school!
  8. Arrive a little early tomorrow night. The entrance to the field in Billerica tends to get very crowded at gametime as does the parking lot.
Hope to see everyone there!

Meet & Greet: Music Boosters 1st General Membership Mtg

The BHS Music Boosters will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:00 pm in the band room at BHS. This meeting gives parents/guardians an opportunity to meet this year's executive board as well as actively participate in plans for the year. Membership in the organization is automatic for parents of students who are in any of the BHS performance ensembles. And our membership is free!!!

The Music Boosters Association follows Roberts Rules of Order and maintains its own Articles of Organization. We are a 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is quite clear and fundamentally supports the education and well-being of our music students and the music program at BHS. We provide financial support for non-school activities, aid the music staff as they deem proper and fitting, publicize the music program and the student performances throughout the year and involve the community in supporting the BHS music program.

A large part of our annual activities are directed toward fundraising for the scholarship programs we have in place for graduating seniors of the Marching Band and music department students. The Tuesday meeting will introduce a number of fundraising opportunities, by directed and general, some of which will require an approval vote by membership.

Bottom line (no pun intended . . . really): The BHS Music Boosters needs you!!!
